Real ID = Real BS

Joe P. tells us why the Real ID act is a bad idea.

This new ID is meant to be mandatory for every American - without one, you could not open a bank account, buy an airline ticket, collect Social Security benefits (never mind that you have a SS ID card and number), you could not enter any federal facility, and you would not be able to operate a vehicle (never mind that current Drivers License you own.) In addition, security experts have stated the lack of wisdom in creating a single database which would contain so much information which identity thieves require to steal info about you. It would be a one-stop shopping center for identity thieves.

A while back I wrote a post titled, “Why is Federalism Important?“. Most of my lefty friends remained unconvinced and seemingly in love with big government.

I have a question for them now though. Does the Real ID act not alert you to the dangers of a large central government? If it doesn’t, then nothing will. I’d like to see a showdown between the states and the Feds on this. Uncle Sam is getting way too big for his britches.

UPDATE: Sadcox also weighs in.

It’s funny. They call it a “drivers license”, but they never mention anything about driving.

[…] Glen Dean wants to see a little good ole constitutional strife between states and the federal government on the issue: I have a question for them now though. Hey — they’re doing it to protect all you bed-wetters. And you dare to question…?! They said the same about warrantless wiretapping, and you bought that one; why not this, as well?

A good old fashioned clash between the states and the feds. Sounds good to me. Bring back nullification.

Glen, I’m still curious to hear your thoughts on this: How do you consider this an encroachment whereas with warrantless wiretapping, you do not?

We have already been around the world on wiretapping. Remember.

Maybe I’ll post about it some time. Maybe.

Well… IIRC, you trusted the big central government to only use warrantless wiretapping to spy solely on terrorists.

Why wouldn’t you buy the argument that REAL ID is solely a measure by the big central government to keep the scary terrorists at bay?

These two seemingly divergent views on civil liberties seem completely inconsistent, to me.
