The Bafflement of Liberal Thinking In Regards To Socialized Medicine
It often baffles me that the same liberals who scream and holler about civil liberties and constitutional rights, are also the same people that support a universal health care system much like the ones called for by all three Democratic candidates. Take this post from Sharon Cobb as an example.
If New Zealand is going to ban fat people, ostensibly because they’ll be a drain on the health care system, then they need to ban smokers and drinkers and people who don’t practice safe sex. They also need to ban Jews, because some develop tay-sachs disease, ban blacks, because some develop sickle cell anemia, and fair skinned caucasians because they are at a higher risk for malignant melanoma.
Ironically, the cause that Sharon has been so energetic about has been TennCare at the state level, and a nationalized version at the national level. Sharon believes that everybody deserves health care for free, as if it is a right. But the thing that she doesn’t understand is that any government powerful enough to give you something is a government powerful enough to control you, to regulate you, and to hold you accountable with stipulations attached to the gift they gave you. Sharon doesn’t seem to understand that. Her heart seems to be in the right place, although that is even debatable, but she is not able to consider the consequences of allowing government this massive power grab.
Oh yes, those unintended consequences that seem to always happen when government gets involved in a market.
