State of the Union- Opinion/Roundup
Before the President spoke, S-town Mike wrote this post, in which he criticized what Bush was to going to say about vetoing any budget bill that did not cut earmarks in half. I expected Mike to point out how Bush had never threatened anything like this when the GOP controlled Congress, and I hoped that he would point out that the stimulus plan supported by the President was itself fiscally irresponsible. But instead he just defended earmarks as a way for legislatures to vote in their constituent’s best interest.
Sadly, this President has been the most fiscally irresponsible in my lifetime. I have been a Republican all of my life, ever since I could utter the words “Carter sucks”. But in 2006, I called for a Republican defeat, because I knew that with this President’s lack of leadership in regards to fiscal matters, the only way we would ever see any fiscal responsibility was with a divided government and gridlock. I apologize for wondering off of the reservation here, but the President’s tough talk on this matter really rubbed me the wrong way. Too late Georgie.
More from:
Bridgett- “The best part is that this is the last one of these he gets to deliver. I find it disturbing to watch the Congress jump to its feet to laud this guy.”
Goldni- “It’s as if now that he’s on his way out, he decided to do a ‘Best Of…’ speech.”
The Crone- “I don’t need a daddy waging his finger at me to be responsible in my spending.”
Thaddeus Matthews (Steve Cohen’s response)- “Unfortunately, the President’s speech included inaccurate remarks regarding Congressional “earmarks.” The number of earmarks exploded under previous House leadership, and for six years President Bush did nothing to slow their growth.”
Webutante- “I like what the president said about staying the course in Iraq, the reprehensible and dishonest process of earmarking, and the need for some economic stimulus in the form of long-term tax cuts.”
Debbie of Right Truth- “As one blogger said, the point of the State of the Union Speech is to ‘to give the president a once-a-year platform for advancing an agenda.’ I’m not sure there was much of an agenda in this speech.”
The Tennessee Majority- “I was disappointed to see the Democrats took such a partisan stance by sitting on their butts when the president called upon the Congress to pass important legislation to defend ourselves against terrorism.”
Adam Groves- “Some of TN’s Congressional delegation recognized that it would be their last State of the Union with President George W. Bush, but most approved of the programs outlined by the President, including the economic stimulus package outlined last night.”
Bear Creek Ledger-”Did you know that the Dhimmicrats had 2 versions of their response to President Bush’s 2008 SOTU address? Lonewacko tells us there’s the English version from Kansas governor Kathleen Sebelius AND there’s the Spanish version from Tx state senator Leticia van Putte.”
The Coyote Chronicles- “I sat watching the SOTU last evening, (ALL evening, it felt like) and I made two observations to a friend of mine watching with me. One, the television coverage seemed well directed. Then I remarked that it was a little unsettling to watch half of the chamber standing to applaud, while the other half stayed seated, looking, if not openly hostile, at least mildly irritated.”
White’s Creek Journal- “Suddenly, realizing that we could lose everything and condemn our children to a hell on earth of our own making, George W. Bush thinks we should do something about global warming.”

To pick a nit, you say:
earmarks as a way for legislatures to vote in their constituent’s best interest [sic]
A legislature is the body as a whole. A legislator is an individual lawmaker.
It should also be “their constituents’ best interests,” but I digress…

Yeah. Your right.
