Buckley and Legalize It, Don’t Criticize It
The Munchkin Wrangler remembers Bill Buckley’s position on the War on Drugs.
Drug prohibition has accomplished none of its intended goals. Just like alcohol prohibition, it has created a multi-billion dollar black market, and despite the expenditure of billions of dollars in the prosecution of this war, drugs are available in every city and town in this country, and they’re cheaper than they were just ten or twenty years ago.
All true. As long as their is a demand for something, there will be a supply, regardless of whether or not it is legal. What is so stupid about this “war on drugs” that we waste our time on, is that we spend millions each year incarcerating non-violent and sick individuals who only pose a threat to themselves. No I am not saying that a person’s drug use doesn’t affect his family. Of course it does. But as far as a crime being committed, the consequence is only self inflicted.
Drug addiction is a symptom of a larger problem, specifically spiritual. Laws that lock people up for drug use only deal with the symptom. The real problem can not be dealt with by government, but should only be handled by science and religion.
