Jeff Gordon’s Gay
Tgirsch has really amused himself with the following comment, based on his bigoted perception and disdain for the millions of fans of this country’s second most popular spectator sport.
No, what I really want is for a black Muslim driver in the #666 ACLU Toyota to start winning all the races.
Heh. That would make some good-ole-boy heads explode powerful quick!
Between comments from readers and friends, there are a few important refinements. The driver should also be openly gay, and instead of a Toyota, the car should be a Renault (French car).
Perhaps he hasn’t seen Talladega Nights. NASCAR fans actually have a sense of humor. We laugh at the stereotypes. I have to say though, I am surprised (not really) that a good, open-minded, and tolerant (feel the sarcasm) liberal like Tgirsch would resort to stereotypes, and call people names like “redneck”. I guess in his world, the word nigger is bad, but redneck is okay. Whatever!
Anyway, about the gay thing. According to Tim Wilson, and lots of Earnhardt fans, we already have a gay driver.
Enjoy.
The Tim Wilson song is funny. On that much, we can agree. And you’re right, I haven’t seen Talladega Nights — generally speaking, I can’t stand Wil Ferrell for more than about 2 minutes.
But when the confederate flags present at NASCAR races outnumber people of color by a ratio of probably hundreds or thousands to one, I don’t think the use of the term “redneck” is particularly out of line. (And if you think that the word “redneck” is even on the same continent as the word “nigger,” well then you’re an idiot. If large numbers of people were ever denied rights, enslaved, beaten, and sometimes lynched for being a “redneck,” I’ve never heard of it.) Anyway, if “redneck” offends you all that much would “good ole boy” be better?
In any case, if you want to charge me with being intolerant of intolerance, then I’m guilty as charged!
DISCLOSURE: I don’t think all NASCAR fans are jingoistic racist religious bigots. Just that a whole lot of them are, probably more so than fans of just about any other sport. To paraphrase the classic conservative copout, some of my best friends are NASCAR fans!
Non Athletic Sport Centered Around Rednecks
so true!
Tgirsch, what about the fans of this rock and roll band, that wrote this liberal song (lyrics).
They don’t wave the Confederate flag because they hate black people. Contrary to what people like you think, white people don’t sit around all day thinking about black people. They wave it because they are from the south. It is no different than a Texan waving the Lone Star flag. They also wave it because they still have the right to, something they will likely lose once you guys get in power.
You often point to the fact that since no black people are in the room, then obviously the room is racist, which is stupid. I guess that golf is a racist sport, huh? What about the NHL? The NBA is obviously racist against white people. Right? I know it doesn’t matter to you, but the sport has a Drive for Diversity program. Expect to see a black driver for Joe Gibbs racing really soon. They are doing their best to bring black people in the sport. Where I am from, I had several black friends and co-workers that loved the sport. It doesn’t matter though. If all black people hated it, that wouldn’t make it racist.
Is redneck the same as nigger? It comes from the same place, which is bigotry. Only you feel good about your bigotry, and you feel it is justified. You also justify your intolerance. Hatred and intolerance is never justified. Never.
They don’t wave the Confederate flag because they hate black people.
You’re right. They wave the flag because they either don’t know or don’t care how supremely offensive it is to black people.
Boy, for someone who claims to have a sense of humor, you sure are taking this personally!
Regarding the NBA and NHL, sorry, but the comparison sucks. In the NHL there’s Jarome Iginla, Ray Emery, and Donald Brashear, and those are just the three that I can name off the top of my head. How many black NASCAR drivers can you name? I don’t follow the NBA at all, but even then I can name Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki.
Frankly, I agree that we’ll see a black driver in NASCAR soon, and that this will be good for the sport. The sooner they turn their back on the racist confederate-flag-worshiping segment of the fan base, the better off the sport will be.
Is redneck the same as nigger? It comes from the same place, which is bigotry.
Yeah, that’s kind of like saying that speeding and murder are both “crimes.” Of course, if I became convinced that large numbers of southerners genuinely found the term “redneck” to be deeply offensive, I’d discontinue use of the term. But as it is, I far more frequently hear it used as a term of endearment. Hell, Gretchen Wilson wrote a friggin song about it, and I don’t remember mobs of people complaining about it. I just remember mobs of people buying the record. So your attempt at comparing “redneck” to “nigger” is simply laughable.
By the way, who am I “intolerant” of? I’m only intolerant of people for their words and deeds, not because of who they are. If, however, my use of the term “redneck” strikes you as an example of “intolerance,” then you never, ever, ever again get to complain about “PC liberals” being “hypersensitive” about anything. Ever. Again.
Rednecks are salt of the earth. I would rather have a group of rednecks around me than, say, the population group making up Code Pink or anyone who posts a Diary at KOS (or Knox/Tenn Views, for that matter).
Evolutionarily speaking, Rednecks are more likely to survive any short-term societal collapse we might see. You liberal wusses? First to go.
I would rather have a group of rednecks around me
… If you like bigotry, ignorance and obesity. To each his own.
If the choice is that or simpering effeminity and liberal fascism, then, so it goes.
I don’t think liberals have a lock on fitness, either. Michael Moore, Rosie O’Donnell, Bernie Ward, Al Gore? Ted Kennedy?
I am just pointing out the irony. Liberals (the modern kind), especially the ones that consider themselves above the majority of the population, are the most pre-judging, stereotyping, and bigoted people on the face of the earth. I just like to point that out.
Redneck might be a term that country people jokingly call each other, but black people call each other nigger too, much more so than white people call each other redneck.
Your continued insistence that since no black people drive in NASCAR, stock car types are racist, is just incredibly stupid logic. Is the IRL loaded with black drivers? How about Champ Car or F1? Alabama’s college basketball team hasn’t had a white starter in twenty years. Must be because the sport is racist. Right? Wrong.
About the Confederate flag offending people. I personally don’t like to offend people. Also, I personally don’t fly the flag, and obviously I oppose it being flown over state govt. buildings. But I support the right of others to fly it. Also, I don’t think everybody should walk on eggshells, making sure they don’t offend people. The ones who are offended just need to get over themselves. Obviously, you don’t mind offending NASCAR fans. Why in the hell should they care about who they offend?
Your continued insistence that since no black people drive in NASCAR, stock car types are racist, is just incredibly stupid logic.
Except that this has never been my logic. In fact, you’ve got it exactly backward. It’s not that the sport is racist because there are no black drivers. It’s that there are no black drivers in large part because of the racist history of the sport, and because of widespread racism among the fan base.
Is the IRL loaded with black drivers? How about Champ Car or F1?
No, but then the stands aren’t filled with racist symbols, either. Of course, I’m sure there are plenty of racists among the fan bases of those sports, too. They’re just not quite as open about it and proud of it.
But I support the right of others to fly it.
Why, then, do you not take it a step further, and support the right of the rest of us to be offended by it, and to say so?
The ones who are offended just need to get over themselves.
Yeah, because hundreds of years of racial discrimination and mistreatment is all just a misunderstanding. We stopped most of that, what, a few decades ago. Why don’t they get over it already? (I’m sure you’d openly tell Jews who are offended by the Nazi flag that they should just “get over themselves,” too…)
Also, I don’t think everybody should walk on eggshells, making sure they don’t offend people.
Neither do I, actually. But at the same time, when people do get offended, I think we should stop and consider whether or not it’s reasonable for them to do so, rather than just dismissively wave it away, as you seem to do.
Obviously, you don’t mind offending NASCAR fans.
Just the ones with no sense of humor about themselves.
Why in the hell should they care about who they offend?
The ones I’m talking about don’t, and it has nothing to do with anything I’ve ever said or done. If you’ve got a T-Shirt or bumper sticker that says “American by birth, Southern by the Grace of God,” I’m talking to you.
“American by birth, Souther by the Grace of God” is bad? Good grief. Southerners can’t even be proud of where they are from? Should they be ashamed? I don’t get it. The racist history of the sport? All American sports have a racist history. NASCAR has only been around 50 years, you know.
You have such contempt for southerners, yet you live here. Weird.
Glen, I would have to disagree with the Confederate Flag issue. I love the South, and I love Alabama, but I love my Country first and foremost. Meaning….why would I want to fly a flag that seperates the two? The Confederate days are over, and have been for almost two hundred years. I admire those who fought for what they believed were good reasons on both sides, but ultimatley I’m glad that we are still the USA. I believe in flying the state flag to show that you take pride in your state, but the Confederate Flag (if for heritage or redneck purposes) could only signify the seperation of our dear Country that I love. It shouldn’t be at the Court houses, or any government place. In my opinion it shouldn’t be at your home. But we do live in a free country (for the most part) and people can make their own choices.
It’s fine to be proud of where you are from. It’s quite another to pretend than you are better than others because of where you are from.
You’re right that all American sports have a racist history. But most of them have done a much better job of getting beyond it than NASCAR has. And none of them explicitly caters to a largely racist demographic quite like NASCAR historically has. (There are still exceptions, of course: I’m looking at you, Atlanta and Cleveland…)
And I don’t have contempt for “southernerns,” contrary to your claims. I have contempt for certain kinds of southerners, just as I have contempt for certain kinds of small-town types and certain kinds of big-city types, and pretty much any other demographic you can think of. The contempt stems not from who they are or where they’re from, but from how they behave. When you proudly wave symbols that were born of the most egregious social injustice in our nation’s history, and that were resurrected in resistance to a movement to correct ongoing residual injustice, and insist that anyone who’s offended by this should “get over themselves,” that’s class-A asshole behavior, no matter where you’re from or who you are.
Melissa raises a good point. You claim someone “hates America” for a single statement, and yet you defend those who proudly and openly fly a symbol of people who hated America so much, they tried to leave her, and went to war with her. Strange double-standard you’ve got there…
The irony.
The irony.
Really? When have I ever claimed, even obliquely, that I’m better than anyone else because of where I’m from?
OMG, that video is hilarious!
Love it!
Go, Junior #88!!!
Redneck please…
Doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.
