Iraqi soldiers flee from fight… again
It was reported Sunday that 1300 Iraqi soldiers and police were dismissed for failing to fight two weeks ago in Basra.
Iraqis refusing to fight against Shiite militias is nothing new. It happened again yesterday. Despite pleas from the US military, a company of Iraqi soldiers abandoned their positions on Tuesday night in Sadr City.
This episode was a blow to the American effort to push the Iraqis into the lead in the struggle to wrest control of parts of Sadr City from the Mahdi Army militia and what Americans and Iraqis say are Iranian-backed groups.
“It bugs the hell out of me,” said Sgt. George Lewis, Captain Veath’s platoon sergeant in Company B, Third Platoon, First Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment. “We don’t see any progress being made at all…”
When will these Iraqis stand up? Looks like John McCain was right about the US being in Iraq for 100 years.
Let’s review:
McCain wants to stay in Iraq until no more Americans are getting killed, no matter how long it takes and how many Americans get killed achieving that goal—that is, the goal of not getting any more Americans killed. And once that goal is achieved, we’ll stay.
So if we’re going to stay anyway, why do the Iraqis have to fight at all?
