Derek Trucks Guitar Solo

Sometimes with all of the glorious acrimony that takes place at Tennesseefree.com, it’s good to sit back and listen to some good music.

The first time I saw Derek Trucks play, he was 15 years old. He and his band were at Brothers Bar in Jacksonville, Al. where I went to school. There were probably about 50 people in the place. After the bar closed down, he and his band came over to my house and partied till about four in the morning. He jammed then, but is even better now.

Derek is good. Thanks for posting.

The Allman Brothers have a local connection - Murfreesboro guitarist Jack Pearson who played with the Allman bros for 3 yrs (97-99). He is a guitarists’ guitarist and stands above most blues/rock guitarists because of his jazz background. He is also an amazing slide player, one of the best. I’ve been watching Jack since ‘90 when his band the Nationals were the Sat nite house band at the Grapevine in Elliston place. His band just played 3rd & Lindsley on 5/3, he never fails to impress. At ever show he plays, a large % of the audience are guitarists listening in awe. Sat before last was no exception. Listen to the way he develops a solo. Never does he play the same solo twice.

Remember the band that Allman bros bass player Oteil and another amazing guitarist Jimmy Herring came from? Yes, back in the 90’s that band - Col Bruce and Aquarium Rescue Unit played small clubs around here. Those were the days. Listen to a minute of Jimmy. Awesome.

When the Bros weren’t on tour, I remember when Butch Trucks would drive up to FSU in his Mercedes to take percussion lessons at the School of Music when I was a student there. Kinda funny but great to see him there.

Since my last comment got moderated, I’m happy to post another from one of my guitar heroes - former Allman Bros guitarist and Murfreesboro resident Jack Pearson.
The guitar solo starts at around 2:50 in this clip of the Nationals - the worlds best blues band ever, in a tiny club in Murfreesboro… go figure. Wait til he pulls his pick out at 4:00 … mindblowing. Derek will have to practice a lot and study some jazz if he hopes to catch up with Jack… . a guitarist’s guitarist.

I saw the Allman Brothers when Pearson was in the band. He was good, as evidenced in that clip. The best lineup though, in my opinion, was the one that preceded he and Oteil, the one with Allen Woody, Warren Haynes, and of course Dickie Betts. I like Derek, but it just isn’t the same without Dickie Betts. Thankfully, at least Warren has joined back up though.

On a side note, I think Chris Wage’s dad plays with Jack Pearson.

Speaking of Jimmy Herring, I have probably attended thirty or so Widespread Panic shows, and I have to say that as much as I loved Mike Howser, the band is the best it has ever been with Herring. The dude is awesome. Check out this version of Hendrix’s “Little Wing”.

Btw, speaking of an awesome band. I saw Phil Lesh and Friends with both Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes. Holy moly, my ears are still ringing.

Of course, nothing compares to when Phil played with these guys.
