Making Lou Dobbs’ Head Explode

I saw this on a display for US flags at Lowe’s here in Memphis. Click the image for a larger version:

I laughed my ass off when I saw it. The market, it seems, has decided, and the “English is our official language” idea is pretty much dead, in market terms.

I think passing laws saying that all government signs/documents be written in English makes perfect sense for a lot of different reasons.

But what I don’t understand is why people get upset when private companies give options like press two for Spanish, or do any number of things that cater to Spanish speaking peoples. They are just businesses responding to markets. Asking them not to do so, just isn’t right. I wish I had taken the time myself, to learn Spanish when I was younger. My son most definitely will, whether he wants to or not, and he will grateful for having done so when he gets older. When Milton Friedman said, “Underlying most arguments against a free market, is a lack of belief in freedom itself”, he was talking about the Lou Dobbs folks too.
