The New Yorker magazine will push some social boundaries in its July 21st edition.

Barack Obama’s campaign is condemning as “tasteless and offensive” a New Yorker magazine cover that depicts Obama in a turban, fist-bumping his gun-slinging wife.

An American flag burns in their fireplace.

The New Yorker says it’s satire. It certainly will be candy for cable news.

But you have to admit, it is a good likeness of the charming couple.

    It’s a good cover but it’s missing a picture of Farrakhan in a George Washington white powdered wig hanging on the wall and a bunch of elitist white kids surrounding him as they sport this year’s most fashionable suicide bomber vests.

    Alright all you DIMWITS who think this is just harmless satire, CONSIDER THIS (I’ll make it quick like a soundbite in hopes you understand):
    Yes it is satire, that’s not the FUCKING point! The point is that this can AND WILL be used to help perpetuate the smears on Obama. Will it turn some Obama voters into McCain voters? No it won’t. But will it turn out some otherwise sit at homers to come out and vote AGAINST Obama? You bet your sweet asses it will.

    The first question that enters my mind: How many black people are employed at the New Yorker and in what positions?
    My guess, something near zero excluding custodial staff.
    This past week I cynically laughed, as did many of you, at teevee’s trouble uttering Jesse Jackson’s “balls” whisper, however, the nearly exclusive lily white panelists blabbing on the hot topic ,on MSNBC of all places, was no laughing matter.
    Pitiful, unattractive cover art on a zero-impact mag…the low comp pop media should eat it up..

    I would not call this racism. HOWEVER this is completely unacceptable and I abhor this cover and the decision makers at the New Yorker. For a reputable publication to put this ridiculous and disgusting cartoon on it is cover deplorable. They know they are feeding into people?s fears. Additionally, to add Mr. Obama’s wife to cover is incredulous. One thing this cover will do is have their subscriptions substantially reduced rapidly especially if they do not understand the definition of satire. If they wanted to make a point they could have put the picture on the inside next to the article to show how ridiculous it is. But they chose to put it on the cover and most people who do not subscribe to the New Yorker will only see the cover. One more thing, satire based on TRUTH and there is absolutely no truth or any of this. It does not matter if you are a republican or a democrat the facts are the facts and even the McCcain camp agrees this is not satire and is completely inappropriate. When this hits the media most people with the exception of the extreme republicans, not all of them, only the extreme ones will be turned off by it also. These are fear tactics which will not work. Let?s all email the New Yorker so they can feel the heat and lose subscribers.

    This is gonna be better than the nutz! cutting commentary. I think the overload may put the left into an even worse state than they already inhabit.

    Here’s a excellent free seminar on meaning and intent.

    The irony here — and it is choice, believe me — is that this satire was intended as an attack on the right. But now, because the artist tried to attack the right in a way he believed clever and ironic, he is being attacked by the left — his own tribe! — for launching an attack on the right that those on the right, the left is coming to fear, could use against the Obamas, either out of idiocy or malice.

    We’ve seen those maddened leftists wrest the meaning and intent away from the artist and watched it turned completely around, and enjoyed the popcorn while the artist’s target audience beats him to a pulp! And, we have the silly drawing out in the open, where we can all laugh at it for the rest of the political season (and on into the future) while the Obamas fume.

    Still, in fairness to the artist, I believe there’s some uncovered nuance surrounding this whole episode. Because much of this backlash was so obviously predictable there has to be someone behind a curtain.

    Glen: this issue contains a feature that is likely to arouse the interests of a readership that extends far beyond the typical New Yorker base.

    Their marketing “experts” probably weighed the risks vs. rewards pretty carefully before they decided to run that cover.

    During Monday’s “MSNBC News Live,” [Mitchell] asserted that “critics” say the cartoon cover “depicts almost every false stereotype that Republicans have been launching against Barack Obama, plays into all the fears that are being generated on the web.”
