Powell’s Endorsement, What Does It Mean And How Much Does It Matter?
I thought about combing through all of William’s posts just to see how many times he has declared the election to be over, but I just don’t think I could even read a smidgen of William’s verbal excrement before barfing all over my keypad. Today’s latest declaration of victory was of course, this post titled “The Final Nail: Powell Endorses Obama.”
Give me a freaking break! Does Powell’s endorsement really make a bit of difference? Does any endorsement? In the primaries, the answer is yes, particularly if the endorsement is a former foe who may also be handing over a few delegates. But in the general, not at all. Now I know what a few of you are about to say. Powell is different, in that he is a lifelong Republican, blah, blah, blah. Yes Powell has served under three Republican Presidents, but most people in fly over country do not view him as “a Republican” but a lifelong member of the Washington elite.
AC wrote a very thoughtful post today in which he made the argument that Powell’s endorsement actually hurts Obama. I don’t know if that is true. Actually I think it neither hurts nor helps. But for many of the reasons that AC outlined in his post, I think the endorsement hurts Powell. There is really no reason that Powell would endorse a guy who was serving in the Illinois State Legislature four years ago against “his friend” John McCain, other than race. Maybe Powell really believes the Democrat talking points he repeated today on Meet the Press. Obviously, I don’t know his heart. But it sure as hell doesn’t look good. After all, as El Rushbo pointed out, there aren’t a lot of other liberal Democrats out there that have recieved the General’s endorsment.
Didn’t affect my vote. Then again, I voted Wednesday.

Is early voting still going on?
Is there a store that sells high quality gas masks?

Patently racist. Here’s why. Either you disagree with his conclusions and judgments of McCain, the GOP and Obama, or you don’t. I would rather have heard you take issue with these judgments than say he chose Obama merely because of his skin color. That’s too easy, and a knee jerk reaction, (i.e. … typical of say… rednecks from AL)
Powell cited McCain’s “unsure” stance on the economy, McCain’s “almost different daily approach to the problem.” Powell was also rightly concerned with McCain’s judgement in his selection of Palin (and the majority of Americans agree - she’s not qualified).
Powell cited Obama’s”steadiness, intellectual curiosity, a depth of knowledge, and an approach to problems… picking a qualified VP.” Also, Obama’s “not just jumping in and changing everyday, but showing intellectual vigor.”
Come on Glen, rise above your racist tendencies. Again, a completely racist statement.
Is early voting still going on?
Until 11/1, I believe.

For William.
Okay whatever.
Again, I don’t know Powell’s heart. I could be wrong. Just doesn’t add up though.

Well, my elderly, Pentecostal mom who lives in east Texas used the exact same reasoning Powell did as to why she was, for the first time in her adult life, NOT VOTING in a presidential election. She’s nowhere near as eloquent as Powell, but she said that the pick of Palin convinced her that McCain was not serious about becoming POTUS.
.
JP, it surprises me how many older women are opposed to a woman running for President. I don’t understand it. My mom’s mom was no fuddy duddy, not religious or conservative at all, but she wouldn’t vote for Mondale because of Ferraro.

The fact that Palin’s a woman had nothing to do with it. This was right after the Charlie Gibson interview, and Mom just didn’t think McCain had picked a qualified running mate. She even mentioned Kay Bailey-Hutchinson as being a woman on that ticket that would have gotten her vote.
.
Understand.
Understand.
Are you sure?
Shouldn’t I just assume Mom’s lying to me, just as Powell is to us?
.
Come on JP. It’s not the same thing. I even said I could be wrong and that I didn’t know his heart.

Fair enough. But this demonstrates how “identity politics” can be played by any side, so let’s call it what it is.

Okay.

Since I don’t think William understands…
Come on JP. It’s not the same thing. I even said I could be wrong and that I didn’t know his heart.
Right. No one but Powell, himself, knows what’s “in his heart.” But before he endorsed Obama, he went into a 6+ minute improvised (not telepromptered), detailed exposition as to why he was endorsing Obama.
If you want to attack the points he made in that declaration, I’d be more than edified to see your presentation.
