Hey, Global Warming Deniers!

July 19th, 2009 . by tgirsch

Nate Silver wants you to put your money where your mouths are:

The rules of the challenge are as follows:

1. For each day that the high temperature in your hometown is at least 1 degree Fahrenheit above average, as listed by Weather Underground, you owe me $25. For each day that it is at least 1 degree Fahrenheit below average, I owe you $25.
2. The challenge proceeds in monthly intervals, with the first month being August. At the end of each month, we’ll tally up the winning and losing days and the loser writes the winner a check for the balance.
3. The challenge automatically rolls over to the next month until/unless: (i) one party informs the other by the 20th of the previous month that he would like to discontinue the challenge (that is, if you want to discontinue the challenge for September, you’d have to tell me this by August 20th), or (ii) the losing party has failed to pay the winning party in a timely fashion, in which case the challenge may be canceled at the sole discretion of the winning party.

Any takers? You can reach me by clicking the ‘Contact’ button at the top of the page.

I’m guessing he shouldn’t hold his breath. But if I were him, I’d call out a bigger fish, like Limbaugh.

Hey one problem the Earth has cooled since 1998. Not gotten warmer.

Sea Ice Growing at Fastest Pace on Record
    Michael Asher (Blog) - November 7, 2008 6:32 PM

As of yesterday the global sea ice anomaly at cryosphere reached 0. Four weeks ago it was at a negative 2.6 million sq kilometers. This is the fasted move in the 30 year history. The sea surface temperature anomaly around the Antarctic remains strongly negative.

It is a safe bet for him because the Earth is warming. It has been since the Little Ice Age. However, it is also a cyclic trend and we are currently on a downward temperature trend (per NASA data since around the turn of the century).

How long will the warming trend continue before things start cycling down again? Since I am not a prophet and God does not tell me these things, I have to say I don’t know. What I do know is, all of the “man-induced” global warming models are in the trash bin for the time being.

What a dipstick. I hope people take him up on it and he loses his ass.

However, if the earth does start warming again, it still doesn’t prove that humans are the cause.

“Global warming deniers”. Tgrisch, I guess with language like that, you agree with Gore and Krugman that people that disagree with you are committing treason against the planet and that the democratic process isn’t working on this and thus needs to be replaced with something more “efficient”.

Nate needs to understand that conservatives, despite all their bluster and talk of being risk-takers, actually aren’t.

You won’t find any conservative willing to put money on their predictions and theories. I’ve been trying for YEARS to goad them into putting their money where their towering intellects are, and they just won’t do it.

Risk takers? Have you ever looked up the definition of the word conservative?

Who is Nate Silver and why would anyone care? JP makes dumbass bets all the time.

Is this another Daily Kos HuffPo thing?

Risk takers? Have you ever looked up the definition of the word conservative?

That’s right — all small business owners are liberals.

JP makes dumbass bets all the time.

So dumbass that a shrewd conservative could take my money, all day… if any were actually brave enough to put down a wager.

    Glen:

I basically divide the “dissenters” on global warming into two groups: the first group includes all the dittoheads who just listen to what they want to hear and then repeat it. The second group is actually smart enough to know better, but they know that global warming science is highly inconvenient to their political philosophy and/or their business interests, so they intentionally obfuscate and mislead. The first group is just a bunch of dumbasses. The second group, yes, I would say they’re treasonous.

Now I’m not ready to throw democracy under the bus as a result of this. But I don’t think I have to. They liars and deniers are losing, slowly and steadily, but surely.

It just amazes me that so many self-described “conservatives” are staking out a position that says there really IS such a thing as a free lunch.

    #9:

Nate Silver is a statistician. He’s best known for correctly predicting the results in 48 of 50 states in the 2008 election, and getting very close on the electoral vote tally (he gave McCain 16 electoral votes too many), and for correctly predicting the win total of the 2008 Tampa Bay Rays.

Tgirsch, “they” are not losing, in fact quite the opposite is true. You have a 60 vote majority in the Senate and you still won’t get Cap and Trade passed. The world is against this nonsense. They see it for what it is, which is just another excuse for more government, more socialism, and one world government. The really stupid people are the ones that believe humans can affect climate.

Also, I have a question for Mr. Silver. Doesn’t he know the difference between weather and climate?

  9. comment number 9 by: DADvocate

If he’d made that bet for July in Cincinnati, he be losing his ass. (Record low for July18 not shown.)

tgirsh - you forgot those who actually took geology in college and realize the climate is in constant change and flux. The question is not whether there is climate change, because there always is, but what is man’s impact? Given the number of variables impacting climate this question isn’t as easy to answer as Al Gore would have you think.

To look at it as a winner/loser dichotomy is a fool’s game. Searching for the truth is the right approach but people who declare the debate over aren’t interested in truth.

Yes, he does. Thing is, most denialists don’t. Those are the ones who he hopes will take him up on his weather bet.

When you add in today’s high, the average high for the summer in Minn. drops to 82.1, while the average historic high rises to 82.5. That’s almost a half degree cooler. If that were going the other direction, Mr. Statistics Pornographer would be screaming “global warming” at the top of his lungs. Isn’t it interesting that he took on this argument and basically proved that there was no warming, that temps actually just stayed the same? By the way, over the next week, it is predicted that temps will remain low, thus continuing to provide more shit for this guy to step in. Leave one pile in a 40 acre field and these jokers are sure to find it.

But who’s the bigger idiot? Him, or the wingers like you, Glen, that haven’t got balls enough to meet his wager and OBVIOUSLY TAKE HIS MONEY?
    .

  14. comment number 14 by: tgirsch

Nice try, Glen, but our 60 vote majority includes “Democrats” like Lieberman and Specter. Anyway, I wouldn’t rule out cap & trade passing just yet.

And if you’re that confident that you’re right, go ahead and take the bet. And if you won’t take THAT bet, then why not suggest a bet that you WILL take? I doubt there’s any such global warming bet — you’d much rather do your kvetching from the sidelines, with no personal skin in the game.

  15. comment number 15 by: glendean

Gambling is for losers. I don’t do it myself. My unwillingness to engage in stupidity does not have any bearing on the validity of my argument.
But as I have already pointed out, it doesn’t matter whether or not global warming exists. Over the last ten years it hasn’t, but who knows it could start warming again for the next 100 years. That still wouldn’t mean that humans were to blame.

Let’s revisit this subject a week from now. Let’s see then how his logic is doing? Better yet, on the first day of fall, let’s revisit this subject then. He was trying to embarrass Hindraker, but he will end up making a fool of himself.

  16. comment number 16 by: Jeffraham Prestonian

I’m sure Nate will start a spreadsheet. Of course instead of a notable conservative’s name in the oppo column, it’ll have to be the generic “if a conservative actually had any balls, they would have won/lost…”

Still clinging to the 1998 thing are you? Tell you what — start from 97 or 99 and see how that works out for you.

Global Warming is more about socialism than it is about science.

Interesting to see how the leader of India responded to Hillary the other day.

  23. comment number 23 by: glendean

Tgirsch, I’m not confident that there will be more cool days than hot days. What I am confident about though is that man didn’t cause either one of those. It’s a nonsensical bet, and it’s childish.

    Are you eight years old?

There isn’t any science to prove Al Gore’s fantasy.

But like eight year olds your team sticks its fingers in its ears and pretends to hear nothing.

There isn’t any way to show you the facts. Your religion blinds you.

Shorter Odd: “No — we’ll continue to used discredited information from non-climatologists AND point out that if it is cold or snowing anywhere on Earth, AGW is just a fantasy cooked up by Al Gore to fleece money (somehow) from everyone!”

    HAHAHAHAHA!

If Dick Cheney had made the documentary instead of Gore, number9 would be saying the exact opposite. Some people follow, some people think. People like number9 have no independent mind. They are told what to think and they fall in line.

The earth is warming, man has contributed, cap and trade won’t help - at least in our lifetime, probably too late. Accept reality or be a dumbfuck republican science denier. The party that rejects science for nascar.
